In his work, the American composer Ben Johnston (born 1926) – one of the foremost representatives of so-called Extended Just Intonation – draws on a wide range of historical, theoretical and stylistic influences. This essay discusses the makings of Johnston’s work, which developed from Harry Partch’s Just Intonation, and highlights the oftentimes unexpected connections to concepts of microtonal composers such as Russolo, Carrillo and Wyschnegradsky.
