The Treatment of Moisture-sensitive Objects with GORE-TEX - Application, Possibilities and Limitations GORE-TEX consists of a membrane of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene which is laminated either to a polyester felt or a nonwoven fabric. lt allows the passage of moisture as vapour but not as droplets. Besides water, vapour of polar organic solvents blended with water pass the laminate. This material can be used for the treatment of moisture sensitive objects on paper or parchment for flattening, backing removal or washing operations. Working procedures and the construction of "treatment sandwiches" are given. Possibilities and limitations of the technique are described in detail based on the treatment of several objects in the workshops of the Austrian National Library.
