Based on their research around Paul Bowles’ collection of Moroccan music (1959), Gilles Aubry and Zouheir Atbane invite the public to explore all together new ways to listen to sound documents. In fact, “respondent” listening here refers to shared intimate listening, and the possibility of entering into sound sympathy with a radical otherness, not limited to the realm of the human and potentially transformative. Alternatively, to intimate listening is to “give an order”. Thus, this echoes the various forms of violence – colonial, systemic and hierarchical – that characterized the protocol used at that time, by Paul Bowles, with the aim of successfully carrying out his project of “cultural preservation”. In this event, exclusively conceived for Le Cube -independent art room, the artists improvise using their archives of sounds and images. The presentation is followed by a discussion with the audience.
