1905 stellten Edwin Welte und Karl Bockisch das erste Modell des Welte-Mignon vor. Mit dem Lochstreifen-Verfahren der beiden Erfinder konnte man erstmals die Interpretation eines Pianisten aufzeichnen und diese auf einem Klavier reproduzieren. Weltes Erfindung war jedoch keine creatio ex nihilo – weshalb in diesem Artikel die Geschichte des Strebens nach musikalischer Reproduktion beleuchtet werden soll.
