Economic incentives for validation are analysed at the individual, company and societal levels using a literature review, OECD indicators, case studies and the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SLFS). The potential for validation in Switzerland among adults aged 25 and over without an upper secondary qualification is described and compared with what proportion of the potential achieves validation or a vocational qualification. The wage advantage for a vocational qualification for adults in Switzerland is calculated for individual case studies as well as for a representative sample of the year 2012. The dependence of the private returns to education on economic sectors and on sociodemographic variables is analyzed descriptively and using multivariate methods. This analysis includes the change in the risk of dependence on social security benefits. The fiscal returns to education are estimated and compared with average returns to upper secondary education in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.
