As research has shown, child protection is primarily focused on mothers, while fathers are often not addressed. But to what extent are fathers part of ”child protection families“? And how are they addressed by social workers? This article answers these questions based on a completed ethnographic study of family support services in Switzerland. The cases illustrate a double non-commitment of fathers towards the family and social work interventions. The study points to the tense coexistence of privilege and disadvantage of fathers in family support services. The article argues that relieving fathers of their responsibilities can reproduce family conflicts and leave autonomy potential untapped.
