Including service users in social work education is one of the goals of PowerUs – a network of lecturers, researchers, practitioners and service users who promote the aim of mending the gap between social workers and service users by including service users in education. In this presentation, we will present three different teaching settings, in which we tried to include service users and the concept of service user involvement in the Master of social work program at ZHAW. These settings differ in their level of intensity of the exchange between students and service users and focus of the discussion (theoretical vs. practical). (1) In the first stetting, the inclusion of service users in social work projects was discussed on a theoretical basis. (2) In the second setting, social workers, service users and students discussed a project which was jointly developed by social workers and service users. (3) In the third setting, we included the concept of service user involvement in two study weeks, which were organized in 2016 (one in the Netherlands with a group of students and teachers from Switzerland and the Netherlands and one in Switzerland with a group of students and teachers from the U.S. and Switzerland). During these study weeks, teachers and students visited field organisations run by service users and discussed the opportunities and challenges of service users and social workers working together in teaching and research. We will present all three settings and will focus specifically on the third one, as we experienced it as the most intensive learning setting. Along with the program and impressions, we will present the evaluations of the students and teachers and draw some preliminary conclusions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of each setting.
