The health care sector has changed. In addition to new training opportunities and new skills and possibilities for the division of labour, the growing shortage of nurses (Schools for Higher Education / Universities of Applied Sciences) as well as other health professionals (vocational training), preoccupies managers of hospitals, nursing homes and community care institutions. The healthcare sector, which progressively shifts its focus from hospital care to community and home care, is also facing high demands on nurses. These demands occur in relation to the management of interfaces, interdisciplinary cooperation, a more self-assured clientele, rapidly advancing technologies and digitisation, as well as the increasing diversity and aging of the society. Therefore, nursing staff should not only have in-depth and up-to-date specialised knowledge, but their roles and areas of responsibility should also be adapted to their new competences. This is the only way to ensure a good quality of healthcare in the future. The health sector, and in particular, the employers, are required to seriously deal with job recruitment issues and with the wise usage of valuable nursing resources.
