According to the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) behavior change is supported by ten processes of change. Based on experiences from smoking cessation, the model postulates that during the first period of a change process (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation stages) individuals use primarily cognitive-affective processes and in the second period (action, maintenance stages) more behavioral processes. These assumptions were tested for moderate intensity physical activity behavior with the data of 644 visitors to an Internet-based expert system for physical activity promotion. Within the first three stages of change more cognitive-affective and within the last two stages more behavioral processes were used. The use of cognitive-affective processes decreased from the first to the second period, whereas the use of behavioral processes increased. Individuals used cognitive-affective strategies significantly more often in the contemplation than in the pre-contemplation stage. There was a trend of increasing use of behavioral processes from the first to the forth stage of change. The expectations derived from the model were verified completely for the dichotomous pre-/post-action stage categorization and to some degree for the five stage categorization
