This article describes the development of a new self-assessment measure called the ”Inventory of Counseling Competence for Social Work” (IBK). To develop the measure, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed based on a sample of 490 social workers from the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Results suggest that counseling competence as a superordinate construct consists of five distinct subdimensions. Future studies are needed to examine the validity of the new measure.
