Common compact façade elements are usually not self-supporting over a span of more than 5 m. For hall buildings self-supporting façade systems are essential to avoid an additional secondary load-bearing structure. PUR sandwich panels, fiber cement boards or aerated concrete elements are widely used. Façade systems made out of timber components or wooden materials are often used for residential or office buildings in Switzerland or other European countries. A wood-based compact façade system however does not exist. The innovative approach is to combine weather-resisting particleboards as inner and outer layer with a core made of soft wood fiber or cork board. The resistance of the core insulation and the composite behavior were investigated in order to fulfill the physical and static requirements of three different scenarios (production halls, warehouses and sports halls).
