In addition to the direct damage on infrastructure and fatalities, shallow landslide activity plays an important role at the catchment scale by influencing the intensity and frequency of debris-flows or sediment transport during floods. Within the context of the standardization of natural hazard engineering and risk management, the main objective of this article is to give a short overview on the “state-of-the-art” for best practice methods and to promote a knowledge exchange on the characterization and quantification of shallow landslide processes in the Alpine region.
