Based on a longitudinal case study of the Institute for Art and Olfaction, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization, dedicated to building a community around artists and perfumers and educating the public about the craft and magic of scent, we discuss the meaning of craft for the field of independent and artisanal perfumery. After providing a short historical overview of the discourse around craft, we present our findings and outline the contested meaning of craft in perfumery. We link our findings to contemporary forms of work and discuss craft as enchantment, which romanticizes the craft spirit by capitalizing on the positively charged historical discourse around craft. While craft provides ‘spaces of hope’ that are filled with meaning, agency and collectivity, those spaces run the risk of turning empty in the context of an entrepreneurial culture. Craft as enchantment thus epitomizes the ambivalent nature of contemporary work.
