Background A few years ago, the training and establishment of so-called community health nurses has been postulated and promoted in recent practice and research projects; however, there is a lack of clear conceptual delineation and clarification of the dimensions and characteristics associated with the concept of community health nursing (CHN). Aim To differentiate the content of the dimensions of CHN and correspondingly explicate the conceptual characteristics and content associated with them. Method A literature synthesis was carried out based on a nonsystematic literature search in the electronic databases PubMed/Medline, CINAHL, Google and Google Scholar, followed by narrative summary and structuring in accordance with Mayring’s qualitative content analysis. Results It was possible to explicate and differentiate the CHN dimensions “public/community health nursing” (P/CHN) as well as “community-based nursing” (CBN) with respect to (a) terminology and definitions, (b) levels and focus of practice, and (c) practice areas and role profiles. Conclusion Further conceptual clarification and consensus on the defining characteristics of the different dimensions of CHN are necessary in order to establish CHN on a basic as well as on an extended or advanced level for German-speaking countries in the long run.
