Batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) are huge and cheap and hence have lower costs as compared to stationary batteries in photovoltaic (PV) installations. EVs thus offer an additional cost benefit when EV batteries can replace stationary batteries of a PV installation. The technology enabling this is a bidirectional functionality for the EV battery. Here, we describe such a functionality to inject EV battery energy into the grid. The electronic device was developed by our Laboratory of Photovoltaic Systems (PV LAB) at Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH in Burgdorf-Switzerland. It was designed for the PV LAB’s Nissan Leaf that is equipped with an off-board solution for research and tests.
