The articles discusses the significance of 19th century piano improvisation and considers how and why it went out of fashion, how it connects to an underlying aesthetic and to cultural tensions between freedom and form. Therefore three pairs of oppositional concepts will be examined: individuality versus conventionality, intuition versus reflection and coherence versus singularity.
