To date, there is no simple way for a forest manager to judge how a forest environment promotes relaxation. An evaluation method of the potential impact of a forest on four relaxation-related aspects (evasion, aAwe, diversity, security) was developed and applied in a municipal forest in Bern. It was based on an in-depth analysis of studies on environmental preferences and the main theories in social sciences explaining them. The method also considered forest evaluation methods that are partly based on these theories. On this basis, an indicator system including the most important forest attributes was developed to assess effects on relaxation as well as a survey method that allows a relatively simple inventory. The application of this method in the Dählhölzli urban forest provides a detailed analysis of the current situation and points out which indicators can be influenced by silvicultural management. This evaluation method can constitute a decision basis to take into account visitors’ welfare in forest planning and management.
