The past twenty years have seen several innovations in the Swiss wood industry. Some recent structural products may involve significant tensile loading perpendicular to the grain. An example is the gluing of strip boards to the bottom sides of the main beam as a support for the secondary beams. This technique is already being successfully marketed by some home builders. The analysis of the test results indicates that wood can offer surprising resistance to such unfavourable loading.
