Theoretical considerations indicate that a single, flexible adhesive layer placed at a vantage height in the cross section can cause a favourable redistribution of the Stresses in a glulam beam and thus increase the bending resistance. Beams manufactured with one elastic adhesive layer exhibited much higher strength than control glulam beams of the same timber grade: thus the theoretical expectations were confirmed. The authors envision a new strengthening technique for glulam beams just with the help of a special adhesive layer.
