Physiological measurements like basal metabolic rate (BMR) are frequently expressed as per-weight ratios (BMR/kg). The hypothesis is that if an average woman gains around 12 kg during pregnancy, her BMR rises proportionately, so that the value per kg remains unchanged. The use of this model facilitates comparison between individuals of different size assuming that the relationship between the measurements is linear and passes through the origin.
