Abstract
What questions does migration pose for the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, which is enshrined in SDG 16? What new perspectives does a peace lens bring to these questions and in what way does migration challenge common perceptions of conflict and peace as phenomena that are spatially bound to specific places? The peace-migration nexus obliges us to study migration across geographies and turns our attention to the safety of transnational lives in different locations. Migrants face violence in these different settings from departure, en route and in places of destination. The chapter will discuss types of structural, cultural and direct violence involved in the reasons for migration and the (in-) ability to migrate, the governance of migration, and the (non)reception of migrants, highlighting experiences of continuities in this regard.
