Abstract
Provenance research presupposes reliable object identification. Selected non-invasive visual and imaging techniques from art technology and forensics are presented. Depending on research interest and object type, there is a proven workflow for the descriptive and photographic documentation of potential manufacturing, usage, or provenance characteristics or residual traces thereof. The aim is to make the visual evidence, research process, and path to knowledge plausible, comprehensible, and assessable.
