Abstract
Purpose Supply Chain Viability (SCV) addresses the growing complexity of supply networks by balancing three key targets: efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. These targets are often influenced by a multitude of internal and external stakeholders and their partially opposed interests. This study provides a starting point for implementing SCV by identifying stakeholder requirements for these targets. Methodology The research followed an exploratory approach. Stakeholder requirements were identified through a semi-systematic literature review, validated via expert interviews, and refined in workshops with experts. Findings The study identifies 38 key stakeholders and 24 requirements for SCV, grouped into efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. Five research propositions address stakeholder priorities, differences in requirements, and the influence of contingency factors. Research limitations The exploratory nature and sample size limit generalizability. Future research could explore industry-specific adaptations or examine the growing complexity of conflicting stakeholder requirements. Practical implications The study presents a stakeholder requirements map for SCV, helping companies identify key stakeholders and their requirements, supporting the implementation of SCV strategies. By addressing all three dimensions simultaneously, companies can prevent isolated improvements and achieve purposeful supply chain development. Societal implications Supply chains must balance social and environmental responsibility with cost-effectiveness and resilience to remain competitive. This study reinforces the importance of achieving this balance to encourage responsible business practices. Originality Building on existing SCV frameworks, the study proposes that analyzing stakeholder requirements provides a practical entry point for implementing SCV. Unlike earlier research, which looked at SCV and requirements separately, this study combines both perspectives.
