Abstract
Beethoven's "Fidelio" is today generally regarded as a political, liberationist opera. This article takes an implicitly feminist approach to show that the politics of "Fidelio" is not central to the work, and that the liberation of Florestan is dependent on the ultimate subjugation of Leonore.
