Abstract
Adolphe Sax’s biography and instrument production are well documented by sources such as extant instruments, archival documents and iconography. Furthermore, many facts and figures are reported and analysed in the publications of his contemporaries, including Kastner, Berlioz and Comettant, as well as in recent research by Haine, De Keyser, Myers, Howe, Kampmann, Mitroulia and many others.
The output of Sax’s company remains unknown in many respects. Sales lists must have existed, for example, but have since been lost.
In order to offer more precise information on Sax’s company and its production figures, I propose to evaluate sources such as extant instruments, the instrumentation norms of the French army bands and bankruptcy inventories, and shall do so by simply counting instruments.
