Abstract
This article examines the role of materiality in a group of abstract photographic works produced in Argentina between 1960 and 1980. It begins with a concise review of key theoretical approaches to photography in order to situate how materiality has been conceptualized within the medium. Building on this framework, the article proposes an understanding of materiality as a relational multiplicity, enabling a more precise description of photographic objects that emerged within the context of Argentine aesthetic abstractionism. These works challenged dominant referential models of photography and advanced a conception of the medium that moves beyond both indexical paradigms and forms of cultural constructivism traditionally associated with it. In this sense, the article argues that photographic abstraction activates a performative logic of materiality, one that destabilizes conventional understandings of the technical image and reconfigures the conditions of its meaning and operation.
