Feltre’s Teatro Sociale and the Role of Provincial Theatres in Italy and the Habsburg Empire during the Nineteenth Century

Provincial theatres have so far been largely ignored by researchers, although they were cultural centres of entire regions in the 19th century: In these theatres, the population could meet, engage in social activities such as gambling and exchange views on socio-political events. This transdisciplinary study (art history, theatre studies, literature, musicology, history), based on rich archival material, takes a look at the repertoire, actors and spaces of such theatres in Italy and Habsburg territories and reclassifies their practices and their socio-historical importance.

Provinztheater wurden bisher von der Forschung weitgehend ignoriert, obwohl sie im 19. Jahrhundert kulturelle Zentren ganzer Regionen waren: In diesen Theatern konnte sich die Bevölkerung treffen, sozialen Tätigkeiten wie dem Glücksspiel nachgehen und sich über das gesellschaftspolitische Geschehen austauschen. Die vorliegende transdisziplinäre Studie (Kunstwissenschaft, Theaterwissenschaft, Literaturwissenschaft, Musikwissenschaft, Geschichte) nimmt, basierend auf reichhaltigem Archivmaterial, Repertoire, Akteure und Räume solcher Theater in Italien und habsburgischen Territorien in den Blick und ordnet ihre Praktiken wie auch ihre soziohistorische Rolle neu ein.
