Abstract
This working paper by the Swiss National Committee to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (CNS-FAO) serves to orient the Swiss Government and interested stakeholders on the transformation of the livestock sector to support livelihoods, human health and nutrition, and the ecosystem in a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable way. As a crucial component of food systems, the wider society and ecosystems, the livestock sector must be an integral part of the transformation path along with other systems components such as agri-culture, processing, and food logistics.
The discussion paper was elaborated by the Swiss National Committee to the Food and Agri-culture Organization of the United Nation (CNS-FAO), a multi-stakeholder consultative body nominated by the Swiss Federal Council.
A working group on "Livestock and Climate" was created within the CNS-FAO specifically for the preparation of this document. The members of the working group participated in the draft-ing of the document and provided regular feedback.
Among others, the following CNS-FAO members (in alphabetical order) took part in this working group: Bourgeois Lüthi Nancy (Lecturer and researcher in International Livestock Systems, HAFL), Erhard Robert (Head of Dairy, Corporate Sustainable Agriculture Develop-ment, Nestlé), Lüthi Rudolf (Head of the Water, Food and Climate Department, Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation), Niggli Urs (President of the institute for Agroecology), Sonnevelt Martijn (Executive Director ETH World Food System Center).
CNS-FAO as an entity as well as individual members provided detailed feedback that was incorporated into this final version. All contributions are gratefully acknowledged.
