Das privat finanzierte museum franz gertsch wurde im Oktober 2002 eröffnet. Dem Namen entsprechend werden vor allem die Werke des heute 73jährigen Berner Künstlers Franz Gertsch ausgestellt, doch wird im Rahmen von Wechselausstellungen auch andere, hauptsächlich zeitgenössische Kunst gezeigt. Bereits während der Bauphase des museum franz gertsch wurden Vertreter des Fachbereichs Konservierung und Restaurierung in die Detailplanung einbezogen. Die Umsetzung der in einer Vereinbarung definierten konservatorischen Betreuung des Museums durch die Hochschule der Künste Bern obliegt sowohl den Dozierenden als auch den Studierenden und findet seinen Schwerpunkt in der präventiven Konservierung. Auf dem Programm stehen neben Klima und Licht die Problematik eines Neubaus, der „Kampf“ mit Architekten und Handwerkern, Ausstellungsaufbau und -abbau und nicht zuletzt das Hantieren extrem großformatiger Werke auf Papier. Schließlich ist auch der Diskurs mit dem Künstler Franz Gertsch, der gelegentlich den Rat der Restauratoren sucht, sehr anregend und stößt auf größtes Interesse der Studierenden.

In October 2002, the privately financed museum franz gertsch was opened. In accordance with its name, objects of the Bernese artist Franz Gertsch (*1930) are shown, however, during special exhibitions other, mainly contemporary art, is exhibited as well. Representatives of the conservation programme of Berne had already been integrated into the detailed planning during the construction of the museum franz gertsch. The agreementdefining the conservational care of the museum—is translated into action through the University of Art in Berne, carried out by professors and students alike, and has its main emphasis on preventive conservation. Environmental conditions and light, the problems of a newly constructed building, the “struggle” with architects and craftsmen, the set-up and the dismantling of exhibitions are part of the schedule, as well as the handling of extremely large works on paper. Finally, the contact with the artist Franz Gertsch who is consulting the conservators from time to time is very interesting and is greatly appreciated by the students.
