Abstract
This chapter offers a reflective exploration of my scientific career so far, tracing the interplay between curiosity, resilience, mentorship, and the complex realities of academia that I have experienced. It examines my journey from childhood curiosity to formal training, contrasting the open-ended pursuit of knowledge with the often opaque, shifting rules of academic life. It addresses challenges such as discrimination, isolation, power dynamics, and the necessity of building supportive communities. The chapter emphasizes the transformative role of mentorship, the creative potential of constraints, and the value of crossing disciplinary boundaries. Recounting experiences of rejection, adaptation, and independence, I reframe setbacks as essential waypoints and highlight the importance of maintaining curiosity over conforming to inherited career templates. Drawing parallels with dance and cooking, I reflect on how discipline and creativity together fuel excellence. Ultimately, the chapter advocates for intentional community-building, critical engagement with institutional culture, and the pursuit of environments that nurture both skill and passion.
