Ben Johnston – Voraussetzungen und Potenzial seiner Extended Just Intonation

Im Werk des amerikanischen Komponisten Ben Johnston (*1926), einem der
pointiertesten Vertreter der sogenannten Extended Just Intonation, kommt eine
Vielzahl von historischen, stilistischen und theoretischen Einflüssen zusammen.
Dieser Beitrag diskutiert die Voraussetzungen von Johnstons Musiksprache –
unter anderem Harry Partchs Just Intonation – und weist auf die vielfältigen, zum
Teil unerwarteten Querverbindungen von Johnstons Denken zu Ansätzen anderer Akteure wie Russolo, Carrillo und Wyschnegradsky hin.

This essay discusses the makings of Johnston’s work, which developed from Harry Partch’s Just Intonation, and highlights the oftentimes unexpected connections to concepts of microtonal composers such as Russolo, Carrillo and Wyschnegradsky.
