Virtues are only occasionally investigated in current education research in secondaryschools, and public discussions exist only from the adult point of view. By contrast,this article addresses the practical interpretations of the concept of “honesty” amongyouths in a school context and presents two dilemmas highlighting conventionaland unconventional rules of honesty at school, based on research carried out usingqualitative methods, investigating how youngsters deal with “honesty” in their dai-ly school lives. Youths must decide upon their position with respect to honesty,taking into account both intrinsic and external factors. I will show by example thatthe virtue honesty in the school context has not only a rhetorical or moral basis,but depends also on institutional, social and individual norms. Furthermore, theresults presented emphasize the pupils’ own concept of justice within the school.From this it follows that in certain situations and in classes taught by certain teach-ers, dishonest rules are legitimate and justified from the youths’ point of view. Withthis practice-orientated research, virtues can be explained in terms of social andinstitutional norms in the school context
