The protective effect of forests is attributed to an increasing role as a cost-effective method for risk prevention and risk reduction. In practice, the protective effect is generally not considered in risk-based protection concepts. During analysis and evaluation methods for forest assessment methods are increasingly common, the quantification of risk reduction through the forest-protection-effect is still under research. This article discusses the assessment, analysis and risk reduction by considering the forest effect according to an example at the A9 Pyhrn highway.
