This article addresses the question whether migrants from EU/EFTA countries and from third countries are sustainably integrated into the Swiss labour market after they have received a financial benefit from the social security system. First, we define what sustainable labour market integration means on the basis of various concepts of social sciences. Using register data from 2005 to 2010, we analyse the extent to which migrants have achieved sustainable integration into the labour market four years after first receiving benefits, and which ascribed characteristics and educational levels contribute to an increased risk of unsustainable integration into the labour market for both groups. Migrants from the EU area are more likely to leave the system after receiving benefits for the first time by neither drawing social security benefits nor being gainfully employed in Switzerland, with only little difference by gender. Among migrants from third countries people with a tertiary degree in particular are increasingly dependent on social assistance for longer periods of time. This shows the necessity of intersectionally differentiated analyses of labour market (re)integration.
