In mountain areas, protective forests are highly important for settlements and traffic infrastructure. At the same time, mountain forests provide habitat for wild ungulates, which feed on the shoots and buds of young trees. In protective forests, problems of regeneration caused by game browsing can have significant financial consequences. These, however, are difficult to quantify since browsing happens today, but the actual damage due to a lack of regeneration occurs much later. In this article, a summary of six case studies from the canton of Grisons is presented, showing how regeneration problems in protective forests caused by ungulates can be assessed in monetary terms. In old stands, where the consequences of long-lasting high browsing pressure are already noticeable or at least will be noticeable in the near future, they can easily be assessed and should be increasingly used as an argument in the political discussion. In well-structured forests, where today’s regeneration problems will only become noticeable in the long term, it is hardly possible to evaluate their effects in monetary terms in a holistic way. In such cases, decisions should not be taken solely on the basis of cost-benefit considerations but also according to the precautionary principle.
