Political ecology aims to highlight the power issues in society–environment relations and pays particular attention to the way environmental problems are formulated and how these formulations respond to different interests. This chapter reviews the various existing approaches that mobilize toponymy in the understanding of the human–environment relationship in a broad sense. It proposes an analytical framework that identifies the key dimensions of a political ecology approach to toponymy. Until the 1980s, a common application of toponymy was its use to reconstruct the history of land use and geographic space. Landscape ethnoecology specifically goes beyond the study of the environment by experts to focus on how social groups perceive and categorize landscape element. From a material point of view, toponymy is crucial for locating and characterizing resources in often extensive activities such as mountain agriculture, pastoralism, hunting, foraging or fishing.
