The weathered surface of the artificial stone lions presented by the Steinfabrik Zürich at the cantonal industrial exhibition of 1894 in Zurich shows the phenomenon of hydrate-sphere formation. The contribution at hand tries to trace the causing production parameters in a combined evaluation of contemporary test results and recent microscopic as well as spectroscopic analyses of clinker remnants in the cement stone with historical practice-oriented instructions. The petrographic characteristics of the unhydrated clinker nodules indicate temperature gradients in the kiln charge at low heating rates and long retention times as a result of natural cooling of the cement clinker to ambient temperature, and thus a Portland cement fired in a shaft kiln. The early industrial specialist literature mentions a deliberate premature reaction of highly reactive clinker phases (calcium aluminate phases, free lime) due to hydration and carbonation through the controlled storage of Roman and Portland cement (clinker as well as cement) or the use of wet mineral aggregates; the specific mechanisms of the heterogeneous setting and formation of hydration centres, growing into spheres in the centimetre size range, provoked by the aging of the Portland cement binder prone to pre-hydration are still a desideratum of research today.
