Digitalisation and new technologies have great potential to support forest ecosystem management that is close to nature, multifunctional and sustainable. There are already many concrete examples of the judicious use of these technologies in this demanding and complex field. The sensors of satellites, drones or smartphones provide ever more precise information on the state and trends of the forest. The digitalisation and networking of management processes encourage system thinking and help to better understand the complexity of forest management. The platforms for the exchange of experience and knowledge make it possible to share the many and diverse lessons learnt from practice, which allows in turn for a better understanding, depending on the context and developments, of the dynamics of forest ecosystems, the silvicultural techniques used and their effects. Virtual reality offers the possibility of bringing the forest closer to the general public. For example, “time travel”, enabled by visualisation of the forest over time, can be used to illustrate the effects of silvicultural measures and relate them concretely to the expectations of society and forest owners. Being well informed and strengthening system thinking and exchanges with forestry actors are important prerequisites for rapid, flexible and efficient adaptation and to demonstrate agility. Due to the current numerous and profound changes (e.g. climate change), this precondition is of paramount importance.
