This publication presents the first part on a continuing project of the Conservation Programme at the Fachhochschule, Bern. lt deals with the history, technology, identification and aspects of conservation of early, non-photographic copying and duplicating techniques. Reason for this project is the vanishing knowledge about these techniques and the extreme sensibility of part of these colouring agents. In addition to that this project is conducted to exarnine the behaviour of such material during mass deacidification because it is intended to treat large collections in Switzerland in the near future. Tue aim of the project is to develop recommendations for conservation of such collections. In the first part terms are defined and the each technique is systematically ordered. The technology of the direct dye-transfer-copying techniques is described in depth with all its variations, colouring agents and support materials. Based on Iiterature studies, primary exarninations of original material and contacts to the relevant industries it can be stated that quite a number of the colouring agents used for these techniques are sensitive to variations in pH, water, organic solvents and light. In the following parts of this project the examinations already started will be continued, additional copying and duplicating techniques will be studied and the materials used for these techniques will be tested to understand their behaviour during conservation treatment.
