Background. In Swiss healthcare, new roles such as advanced practice nurses (APN), clinical specialists (KliF), and medical practice coordinators (MPK) are becoming established. Key differences relate to the various levels of competence and the associated competency to act. Aim. Do currently described fields of action of the professional roles APN, KliF, and MPK correspond to defined competence levels? The aim is to contribute to clarification of the roles of APN, KliF, and MPK. Methods. Through a literature search, publications found in MEDLINE (via PubMed) and CINAHL (via EBSCO) and relevant websites, between 2019 and 2022, were analyzed by two authors. Results. A total of 13 publications were assessed. Fields of action of APN were mainly in the highly specialized field of treatment, accompaniment as well as counseling of patients. KliF’s fields of action were delegated assistance tasks under medical supervision, and MPK’s fields of action were administrative and coordinative. The respective fields of action could be linked in general to the corresponding competence levels. Discussion. Competence levels ranging from known action parameters to specialized problem solving skills show how crucial the necessary training are. For the performance of the respective role, the necessary educational levels are elementary so that responsibility and competencies match in order to be able to perform tasks in an action-competent and independent manner. Conclusions. The basis of a successful interprofessional collaboration is a competence- based use of the respective role, which can enrich and relieve the health care system.
