Older bridges were often not designed for earthquakes. In order to still provide a structural proof, new methods such as Conditional Spectra (CS) or Conditional Mean Spectra (CMS) have been developed recently. To quantify the advantage of the latter method, seismic internal forces of four Swiss existing bridges are calculated and compared based on Conditional Mean Spectra (CMS) and Uniform Hazard Spectra (UHS) in this paper. The bridges are two reinforced concrete and two steel bridges, one of which is used for road traffic and one for railway traffic. The bridge selection is intended to show the validity of the results for different bridge types. On average, the computations using the CMS approach show lower internal forces than using the UHS. However, the difference is smaller than expected. In addition, the practical application in the engineering office is very time-consuming with today's software solutions. Nevertheless, the results also show that the differences at component level can be significant.
