Report «Repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic on poverty and socioeconomic inequality» The present study summarises the status of research on the topic of poverty and inequality in the context of the coronavirus pandemic in Switzerland. It also provides an overview of data surveys and research projects that have been completed, are still underway or at the planning stage. An online survey of researchers was conducted to this end, alongside extensive Internet and literature searches. The synthesis report was compiled by the Bern University of Applied Sciences on behalf of the National Platform against Poverty. The study shows that the financial assistance measures instituted by the federal government and the cantons to mitigate the economic effects of the pandemic were effective at counteracting a widespread increase in precarity. Nevertheless, many research findings point to an exacerbation of socioeconomic inequalities and already precarious circumstances, at least on a temporary basis. The lower the socioeconomic status of a household, the more pronounced the financial losses and the related psychological strain in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. Individuals and families who rely on income from precarious employment conditions were particularly affected, as social welfare payments have less of an effect here, for a number of reasons: in some cases, non-regularised residence or employment status meant that there was no entitlement to social security and/or health insurance benefits. In other cases, entitled recipients failed to claim such support out of fear of consequences relating to legislation on foreign nationals or stigma. The report is published in German and in French, summaries are provided in English, German, French and Italian.
