The festival ‘Neue Musik Rümlingen’ is a small yearly festival situated in the greater surroundings of Basel, Switzerland, which programs not only contemporary classical music but also new music composed for landscapes, interactive happenings, community gatherings and theatrical situations. One unique feature of the festival is its artistic mutation over its 30-year lifespan, which has been very well documented by the festival’s programming team. In this case study, the researcher takes a discourse analytical approach to review the festival’s collection of open-sourced materials, which are purposed for generating a self-curated identity. Due to the programming team’s unique festival presentation in hindsight, the research questions poignant within this case study are: How is a self-image produced through the materials and publications presented by the festival? How is the festival’s narrative then built? How is the self-image presented interpreted by its audience? A closer analysis of multi-modal discourse examples including pictures, video and physical publications, reveal that the festival’s identity is not only naturally occurring but is also man-made. The programming team’s curation is not constricted to artistic planning, but becomes timeless in its promotion of self-image and preservation of contemporary music.
