For the use of hardwood products, all relevant properties of the products as well as of the joints must be known for the design. Existing normative regulations are primarily based on investigations on softwood and have not yet been comprehensively proofed for hardwood. The test results presented refer to connections with dowels in beech wood. The test series comprises investigations for the fabrication and assembling of the connections and the load carrying capacities. The load-bearing behavior of the connections in glued laminated beech timber correlates well with the design in EN 1955-1-1:2014, EC5 but is underestimated. By adjusting the material parameters and introducing a adjusting parameter, the previously underestimated load capacities of the standards can be compensated. From the results, recommendations for the design of connections regarding installation requirements and minimum distances could be derived.
