Personal development is important in social work. To support students in working on their personal development, a better understanding of who studies social work and what previous experience did they make are vital. These considerations also mark the beginning of the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) progress study, which is presented in the following article. The first sub study of the progress study, which is designed as a cohort and panel study, focuses on questions about socio-cultural background, educational background, personality traits and the motivation behind the students’ decision to study. From the data obtained we can identify several topics which are important for personality development in a study programme: The degree programme in social work is conspicuously gender-segregated. In addition, the students’ educational background and the educational background of their parents indicate a strong career orientation (as opposed to a strong academic orientation), which is important for planning learning strategies and opportunities. Based on the students’ personality traits, students’ strengths can be detected and used as an entry point for further personality development. Students’ motives for choosing to study are always related to life experiences. The motivation to grow as a person is already part of the motivation to choose social work as a course of study and can be used for further personal development.
