Background Amongst the dramatic changes in the world that are of particular importance to the health professions are profound social and demographic changes, increasing technologization, digitalization, environmental degradation and changing healthcare economics. These complex, new challenges require adjustments to the roles and tasks of all professionals in the health system. Objective Contemporary progress in physiotherapy can only happen on the basis of fundamental critical analysis and further development of the profession. The Critical Physiotherapy Network (CPN) was founded in 2014 and advanced these critical work internationally, through research, publications, courses and conference contributions. With a growing number of German-speaking members, it was time to set up a German-speaking CPN section (DCPN) to facilitate networking and cooperation, and promote critical physiotherapy. Method Answering first questions regarding the necessity, goals, approaches, field and perspectives of critical physiotherapy. Methodologically closely related to qualitative research, critical physiotherapy enables professional development based on the needs of individuals and society within their ecological context. Conclusion By questioning taken-for-granted assumptions and foundations of physiotherapy practice and science, critical physiotherapy opens toward new professional understandings and scopes of practice.
