The short-term psychological reactions in response to the COVID19 pandemic include an overall increased level of anxiety, depression and distress, with much evidence suggesting that younger people are more affected. The dynamics of psychological reactions seems to follow directly the epidemiological dynamics of the infection. This means higher level of psychological reactions following increasing infection rates and decreasing psychological reactions when the curve is flattening. Many questions remain open. In the longer term, a primarily recession-induced increase in psychological disorders can be assumed. Public mental health must be a central element of pandemic management.
