For the wide use of hardwood products such as glued laminat-ed timber made of beech, all relevant properties of the prod-ucts as well as of the joints must be known for the design. Ex-isting normative regulations are primarily based on experimen-tal investigations on softwood and have not yet been comprehensively and completely proofed for hardwood. The test results presented in this article refer to connections with dowels. The test program is divided into tests to determine the pre-drilling diameters for optimum installation and to evaluate the design rules for determining the load-bearing capacity. The test program is divided into small- and large-format test series with practically relevant cross-section sizes and loads (multiple slotted-in plate connections up to approx. 1500kN) with vary-ing of the edge distances and fastener spacing, member thick-nesses, number of fasteners in and perpendicular to the grain direction and diameters.The presented results show that the load-bearing behavior of the connections in glued laminated beech timber correlates very well with the previously used design approaches accor-ding to SIA 265:2012 or SN EN 1955-1-1:2014. By adjusting the material parameters used and introducing a contribution of the rope effect, the previously underestimated load capacities of the standards can be compensated. From the results, recom-mendations for the design of connections regarding installation requirements and minimum distances could be derived. The basis for this was the maintenance of a high ductility. First pub-lished in 2019.
