Theoretical considerations indicate that a single, flexible adhesive layer placed at a vantage height in the cross section can cause a favourable redistribution of the stresses in a glulam beam and thus increase the bending resistance. The requisite mechanical properties of the adhesive layer were determined and communicated to the adhesive manufacturer as target values. The industrial partner was able to develop several adhesive layers with the required mechanical properties. Creep and delamination tests helped to eliminate all but three of the adhesive layers for bending tests. The beams manufactured with the special adhesive layer exhibited much higher strength than control glulam beams of the same timber grade: thus the theoretical expectations were confirmed. The authors envision a new strengthening technique for glulam beams just with the help of a special adhesive layer.
