Recent researches have demonstrated the potential for bonding solid wood by a welding process without any application of adhesive. Mechanically induced friction seems to be contributing to bonding of two wood pieces by a process resembling welding. Two types of welding procedures have been studied on solid wood and OSB panels: linear friction for solid wood and rotational friction for OSB panel. Linear friction was studied on Canadian species (Black Spruce, White Pine, Sugar Maple and Yellow Birch) and rotational welding was studied with solid maple wood dowels and OSB panels (French and Canadian). The results obtained for shear tests indicate that the Canadian woods perform comparably to the European woods in welding procedures tested in this research.
